From an early age Terry Shires knew what he wanted to do. At 16 he began training with the established firm of F J Rogers Ltd of Leeds, England. His skill and care in organ pipework developed rapidly with particular specialisms in façade and mixture work together with reeds. He was soon responsible for training the many other apprentice pipemakers within the company. From this traditional grounding, Terry became convinced that there was room to develop the balance within pipemaking skills between traditional styles and more modern working practices. During 1988 Terry tested these views by joining with a like-minded colleague to further explore these areas. After several years of progressive refinement it became clear that the next step in satisfying his own exacting standards was to establish his own pipe shop.

In 1994, with the support of his wife Annie, Terry commandered the family garage as a workshop and from within these 200 square feet Shires Organ Pipes was born. Only now was Terry able to fully hand craft organ pipes as he knew they should be through meticulous care, and with the highest standards in meeting the exact specification of the customer in a way no other pipe shop had achieved.
